Kognitio's Cubism Targets Big Data

February 14 2011

UK-based Kognitio, which offers data warehousing, business intelligence and analytics, has today announced Pablo, a new software solution for handling large data sets via 'virtual' OLAP cubes.

The new software claims to eliminate the cost, complexities and latency of physical OLAP cubes by creating 'virtual' cubes at the data's source without compromising performance.

Previously, companies wanting to analyze their large data sets were limited to loading just the data that could be handled by intermediary databases called OLAP 'cubes'. Cubes are the building blocks of many proprietary analysis solutions used by the market research industry, and are expensive, slow the process, and require IT involvement. Kognitio says Pablo's technology enables ordinary users to build and query virtual cubes on the fly so they can dig deeper into massive amounts of data and answer highly specific queries in near real time. Kognitio calls this capability train-of-thought analysis.

Pablo will work in conjunction with Kognitio's WX2 analytic database. The new software also helps 'bring data analytics to the masses' by eliminating the need for costly and complex front-end applications. Pablo can be accessed for analysis using any MDX-compatible tool such as Microsoft Excel.

According to John Coppins, Product Director at Kognitio, 'Pablo is a huge leap forward compared to today's data warehouse appliances, analytic databases and other business intelligence environments. It may not be the immediate death of the physical cube, but it serves notice of its demise.'

Kognitio is based in Bracknell, UK, with North American headquarters in Chicago and offices in New York, Raleigh, Minneapolis and other US cities. Kognitio Pablo will be available from June 1, 2011 and will ship with WX2 as a separately licensed/activated capability.
