HP Buys Vertica

February 14 2011

Hewlett Packard has announced the acquisition of Vertica, a privately held real-time analytics platform company based in Billerica, MA, USA. Terms were not disclosed. The IT giant says the buy will enhance its service for the analysis of massive amounts of data.

Palo Alto, CA-based HP, whose portfolio includes printing, personal computing, software, services and IT infrastructure, says that Vertica will enhance its capabilities for handling complex data sets and real time business analytics in physical, virtual and cloud environments.

Shane Robinson, EVP and Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at HP comments: 'In today's highly competitive environment, customers need the ability to manage the increasing amounts of data and growing streams of information with more flexible, more dynamic architectures. Vertica's unique platform combines simplicity with industry-leading performance, allowing HP to leap ahead of the industry in the race to analyze massive amounts of data.'

Vertica President and CEO Christopher Lynch says that by adding HP's brand and global reach, 'customers will benefit from the commitment, expertise and resources from the largest technology company in the world. We will be able to better help customers develop flexible business performance solutions that improve decision making and streamline business processes.'

Vertica is used by more than 300 customers worldwide, ranging from social media companies such as Groupon and Twitter, to metrics companies such as VMS and Visible Measures.

HP expects the acquisition to close in the second quarter of its fiscal year 2011. Thereafter, Vertica products will be available through HP sales and service channels.
