Australian newspaper publisher News Ltd has appointed Darren Stein as Director of Consumer Insights and Business Intelligence, responsible for creating a new team which will analyse feedback from both readers and advertisers.
Part of Rupert Murdoch's media empire, News Ltd's publications include the Adelaide News, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian.
Stein joins from telecoms operator Optus, where over the past eight years he has held a number of research roles.
Most recently, he worked as General Manager, Insights, Segmentation & Planning, in charge of a team of 40, which provided the business with thought leadership and direction through insight and market research, competitive analysis and data mining. Prior to this, he spent two years as an Account Director at Jigsaw Strategic Research.
In his new role, starting next week, Stein will draw on existing expertise within News Ltd, and recruit outside staff for the new consumer insights and business intelligence team.
'It is vital we know what our readers want, so we can excel at attracting new readers, retaining existing ones and servicing their needs across all of our distribution platforms,' states Group Marketing Director, Ed Smith, to whom Stein will report. 'Darren's deep understanding of consumers and broad experience in business intelligence and product development, will enable us to acquire insights and intelligence and share it across our divisions to the benefit of all mastheads.'
