ABI Research Acquires 'Teardown' Specialist Market Eye 1

US tech specialist ABI Research has acquired Market Eye 1, an agency which offers 'teardown' analysis of mobile handsets segmented by manufacturer. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

'Teardown' is the act of disassembling a product to identify its component parts and functions, to aid understanding of how it works, analyse the costs involved and provide other information for competitor and market intelligence purposes.

ABI says adding teardowns to its existing research on mobile devices will provide the 'final element' for a complete end-to-end understanding of the mobile device industry.

Market Eye 1 was founded in 2009 by cellular industry veteran James Mielke. ABI will now offer its own 'Mobile Device Teardown Service', offering photos and x-rays of boards and components, as well as power measurements taken during simulated use, and component cost estimates. This service will cover virtually every phone model produced each year.

Additionally, ABI will offer a 'Mobile Device Platform Intelligence Service' to provide full specifications and a roadmap for each release from 2000 to 2013. This will include overlay roadmaps for any of nearly 20 platform providers of cellular, WiMAX and LTE chipsets, and application processors.

Mielke (pictured) has joined ABI as Vice President of Engineering, to assist in the integration, management and expansion of the new group.
