AP and NORC Partner for Social Research Center

September 1 2011

In the US, the Associated Press (AP) and the National Opinion Research Centre (NORC) at the University of Chicago have joined forces to launch The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Trevor Tompson, the AP's Global Director of Polling and NORC Executive Vice President Daniel S. Gaylin will head the new facility. Headquartered in Chicago, the Center will conduct in-depth public opinion research projects on newsworthy topics and also contribute to survey research through methodological experimentation. Its twin goals are to create 'high-impact journalism and data' and to 'educate journalists and the public about polling'. It will also sponsor public forums on topics it considers 'important and newsworthy.'

All research will be sponsored by philanthropic organizations and other independent groups or individuals. The first report analyzing public opinion on civil liberties 10 years after the 9/11 attacks is due out this month.

John Thompson, President and CEO of NORC, said: 'We are excited to partner with the Associated Press and its world-class team of journalists to bring insightful data and analysis to the broader public that will assist them in making decisions and assessing the world around them.'

Michael Oreskes, AP Senior Managing Editor for US News, added: 'AP is committed to being an industry leader in high-quality opinion research. We see independent research into the public's views and opinions as a core part of our journalism.'

The AP is a not-for-profit news co-operative and conducts regular polling with GfK as well as other partners, and Tompson says the new initiative is designed to complement these partnerships.
