In Australia, the government of Prime Minister Julia Gillard has increased its spend on MR, with £33m laid out in 2010/11.
Gillard's federal government used research to measure public opinion on controversial issues including plain tobacco packaging, the national broadband network (NBN) and 'pokie' (poker) reform.
Overall expenditure rose 4.5% - not all that much in itself, but surprising to many in light of the fact that her predecessor Kevin Rudd had already increased spend by 46% the previous year, his last as Prime Minister.
