Evidon Buys Mobile Privacy Specialist

June 10 2013

Online privacy and compliance specialist Evidon has announced the acquisition of MobileScope, a data control and privacy platform for mobile applications. Terms were not disclosed.

Scott MeyerMobileScope was developed by David Campbell, who runs cloud infrastructure tech company Safeinstance; FTC and Wall Street Journal consultant Ashkan Soltani; and privacy software developer Aldo Cortesi, as a tool to give users transparency and control over tracking across their mobile applications. The firm claims to offer 'the only... easy to use method to monitor information flowing from mobile devices', and Evidon says the deal will help scale its existing tools and augments its expanding dataset.

Evidon Encompass, the web site analytics component of its Evidon Labs suite, provides users with a map of all the tracking technologies operating across their sites, including 'multi-tiered tracking' where data is referred from one company to another - users can keep pages loading quickly as well as complying with good practice regarding user data and disclosure. The integration of MobileScope adds the same capabilities across businesses' mobile apps.

Soltani says the integration 'not only brings our tools to a much larger portion of the market, it brings together multiple transparency-enabling innovations to create unparalleled, comprehensive data controls for businesses.' Evidon CEO Scott Meyer (pictured) says his firm is 'thrilled' to incorporate MobileScope's technology and comments: 'Mobile applications have become an essential part of any brand strategy. With mobile apps typically running on separate platforms and often being developed by partners, keeping track of these data flows and ensuring maximum performance is a daunting task.'

Encompass uses no tags, and makes use of a proprietary library of more than 1,300 tracking scripts and of Ghostery, an 'eight million-member' opt-in panel anonymously supplying tracking code data on over 26 million web sites. In April, Evidon introduced an app called 'Ad Control', allowing mobile users to opt out of 'cross-app' behavioral advertising served on their devices.
