April 6 2017

Academic publisher SAGE has partnered with the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath to launch the Public Data Lab, which will facilitate research, engagement and public debate around the future of the data society.

Dr Jonathan Gray and Professor Nick PearceUnder the direction of Prize Fellow Dr Jonathan Gray and Professor Nick Pearce, the new lab will aim to develop and disseminate research, teaching, design and participation formats for the creation and use of public data. Its team will focus on current and future global challenges - from climate change to tax base erosion, migration to automation, working in collaboration with an interdisciplinary network of researchers, practitioners, journalists, civil society groups, designers, developers and public institutions across the world.

SAGE's President of Global Publishing, Ziyad Marar comments: 'In an era of unprecedented data flows we are fundamentally changing how we make sense of the world, and SAGE firmly believes that social science needs to play a critical role where this impacts on society. It is our hope that the Public Data Lab will become a pioneer of innovative digital tools, methods and born digital data in public policy, research and teaching'.
