Houston, You've Got a Problem

March 29 2004

A joint poll on favourite US cities by AOL Travel and 'Travel + Leisure Magazine' has perhaps unsurprisingly rated New York as having the most stylish people and Honolulu as the best for a honeymoon. Fans or residents of Houston, however, may be disappointed with last place in four categories and no appearances in the top three.

New York may be happier with its last place, for 'peace and quiet', than either Philadelphia (attractiveness of people) or New Orleans (cleanliness). Los Angeles may not like its tag of having the least friendly people, but will have to try and laugh about it for fear of making things worse.

Nearly half a million AOL members voted on a list of twenty-five cities, as follows: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix/Scottsdale, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, San Juan, Santa Fe, Seattle, Tampa/St. Petersburg, and Washington, DC.

Participants voted on cities they lived in or had travelled to in a variety of categories, using a scale of 1 to 5, and identified themselves as natives of or travellers to the city rated. Rankings are based on the average scores of results from travellers only.
