Rigg to Head PSI

August 4 2004

Malcolm Rigg, former MD of BMRB, will be the new Director of the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) when Jim Skea leaves in October. Skea becomes Research Director of the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC).

One of the oldest and most respected social policy research institutes in the UK, the PSI has research groups working in the areas of employment, the environment and social policy and using a wide array of research techniques. Since 1998, the PSI has been a wholly owned independent subsidiary of the University of Westminster.

PSI trustee Charles Cox praised Rigg's knowledge of research and research management, commercial acumen and commitment to social policy research: 'At this exciting point in the PSI's growth Malcolm will bring an excellent balance of management experience and a strong personal commitment to the quality and values of the PSI'.

Rigg, who stepped down as MD of BMRB in April of this year, says he is excited by the challenge: 'I am absolutely delighted to be given the opportunity to lead PSI in its mission to provide and promote research in support of public policy. Robust research is a cornerstone of democratic policy-making. PSI has highly talented researchers in all of its teams and I am determined to ensure that it continues to be at the forefront of policy research provision'.

Rigg was Director of social research at BMRB before becoming MD, and worked previously as director of research at COI, Head of Public Interest Research and Head of Information at the Consumers' Association. He was also a senior research fellow at the PSI.
