Seed Round for Real-Time Data Platform Sumatra

Austin, Texas-based data platform Sumatra has raised $1.5m in a seed round of funding, which it will use to expand its operations and business reach.

With Sumatra's self-serve tools, data scientists can build their own pipelines from event-based data, which the firm says removes the data engineering dependencies that delay or block most machine learning and analytics deployments. Launched by Greg Kuhlmann and Lucas McGrew (pictured) in 2020, the firm enables users to take automated actions that steer the customer journey in real time and deliver machine learning models 'in milliseconds' to intervene in the moment when customers are engaged. This includes identifying the moments when customers are at risk of trolley abandonment, and segmenting them from click-stream behavior to suggest relevant products and offers.

New funding has been led by S3 Ventures with participation from Sentiero Ventures, Data Power Ventures and AI Sprouts. Eric Engineer, Partner at S3 Ventures, who led the investment and will join Sumatra's Board of Directors, comments: 'Sumatra is democratizing real-time machine learning. Once data scientists of all stripes are empowered to deploy on their own - without having to depend on a costly, over-stretched data engineer - we will see a flurry of new use cases across companies of all types and sizes'.
