Yahoo! Appoints User Experience Veteran

Yahoo! has appointed Larry Tesler as VP of its User Experience and Design Group. He will also serve as a Research Fellow for Human-Computer Interaction within Yahoo! Research Labs. He leaves Amazon.com where he was VP of Shopping Experience.

His usability and computer interface CV is extraordinary, including 17 years at Apple Computer and seven at Xerox Palo Alto.

Tesler received a B.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University in 1965, and worked initially in a research position at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. In 1973 he moved to the legendary Palo Alto Research Center where he spent seven years, helping with the development of such standard techniques as 'cutting and pasting' and 'modeless editing'. From 1980 to 1997 he worked at Apple Computer in roles including Chief Scientist, VP of Engineering and VP of the Advanced Technology Group.

Next, Tesler worked as President of Stagecast Software, developer and publisher of educational programming tool Creator - then in October 2001 he moved to the Amazon role, assessing customer satisfaction and web site usability and assisting product design teams. Other jobs include President of software developers Information Processing Corporation and founding director of ARM, the microprocessor intellectual property company.

Tesler, 60, will be based in Sunnyvale, Calif., and report to Chief Product Officer, Geoff Ralston, who describes him as 'one of the industry's foremost experts on creating great user experiences. Larry has the ability to draw on his extensive knowledge of both computer science and user-centered design to help define and drive product strategy and innovation at Yahoo!' says Ralston.

Usama Fayyad, Chief Data Officer at Yahoo! and head of Yahoo! Research Labs, says Tesler's presence will 'help shape the future of Yahoo! Research Labs as we grow it into a world-class resource for technological innovation that is core to the future of the Internet'.
