BMRB Begins UK Sports Survey

July 25 2005

UK agency BMRB is conducting a new continuous survey for the government's Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to measure participation in sporting, leisure and cultural activities.

The 'Taking Part' survey has been commissioned by the DCMS along with partner organisations Sport England, the Arts Council, the Museums, Libraries & Archives Council, and English Heritage. The fieldwork, which began last week, will involve home interviews with 27,000 adults plus a 1,500 boost among black and minority ethnic groups.

As well as data about levels of participation and attendance, the survey will collect information about factors that help or hinder participation in various activities. The results will inform policy and planning, and help the DCMS to assess progress towards its overall aim of improving quality of life through culture and sport.

Until now, there has been no single survey that provides detail about participation and attendance across all DCMS sectors. According to BMRB: 'The new survey will provide a comprehensive national picture, enabling policy makers to understand where development initiatives and marketing activities should be targeted.'
