IRI Explores Healthy Eating Trends

February 1 2006

A new study from Information Resources, Inc (IRI) focuses on eating trends and highlights the product innovations that can meet consumers' growing health concerns. The report, based on analysis of consumer and retail data, is designed to help manufacturers identify profitable health-oriented opportunities.

The findings in 'Healthy Eating Trends: Innovative Solutions to Evolving Consumer Needs' are based on data from the IRI Consumer Network Household Panel, IRI MedProfiler Health & Wellness Survey, IRI Attribute Drivers, IRI BehaviorScan and IRI AttitudeLink.

The report points to a growing market for healthy products among older consumers who want to control conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. It states that the sales of many 'light' products are growing at double- and triple-digit rates, and that whole grain foods also offer growth potential. The organic market is also growing quickly - at 13%, growth is far outpacing total consumer packaged goods (CPG) growth.

Other successful innovations include the removal of trans fats, the creation of 'tastier' whole grain bread, and the introduction of calorie-restricted packs.

IRI Global Chief Marketing Officer Janet Eden-Harris states: 'CPG manufacturers recognise that translating 'better for you' initiatives into profitable sales growth requires an understanding of the complexities of consumers' eating behaviours'.
