UK Grocery Competition Grows

February 9 2006

The latest UK supermarket share figures from the TNS Worldpanel show that, while Tesco remains dominant, there is increased competition as both Sainsbury's and Morrisons fight back. Year-on-year sales growth across all stores is 4.4% - the highest since September 2004.

Sainsbury's sees its highest market share (16.3%) since February 2004, with year-on-year sales growth of 6%. By contrast, Asda saw just 2% growth, with its market share slipping from 17.0% a year ago to 16.6% now. Morrisons' share of 11.1% has remained largely unchanged for the last seven periods.

Tesco now holds a 30.6% share of the market, and saw sales growth of almost 10%. However, it is increasing its share less quickly than during last year.

The findings are based on TNS Worldpanel data for the 12 weeks to 29 January 2006. TNS Worldpanel monitors the household grocery purchasing habits of 20,000 demographically representative households in Great Britain.
