NPD Bags New Territory

US-based provider the NPD Group will launch what it says are the industry's first comprehensive tracking services for the country's accessories business, in the first half of 2007. Products covered will include bags and luggage, watches, jewellery, sunglasses and small leather goods.

Consumer and retail point-of-sale tracking will be launched simultaneously, with the latter initially reporting style-level sales of women's and men's bags in department stores and national chain stores, and expanding later to other categories. Bags in both services will include fashion handbags, sport bags, business bags and travel bags / luggage.

NPD Group President Dennis Brown says the new service will fill 'a critical void in the marketplace, as there is currently very little information available that monitors sales in accessories'. NPD already provides in-depth coverage of Fashion & Sports sectors including Apparel and Footwear, of which Brown says accessories are 'a natural extension'.

Art Spar, the Group's recently appointed President of Apparel, says the service will be crucial 'not only for the established accessories players, but also for those apparel and footwear companies that have or are expanding into accessories.'
