Ponemon to Drive CASRO Public Affairs Effort

December 5 2006

The Council of American Survey Research Organizations (CASRO) has appointed Dr. Larry Ponemon, Chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute, to serve as Chairman of its Government & Public Affairs (GPA) Committee and GPA Director. He succeeds Jim Robinson, creator of the GPA function, who died in September.

Dr. Ponemon, who in his new roles will assist in the direction of public policy and coordinate regulatory strategies for the survey research industry, comments: 'The protection of survey respondents' privacy and the responsible use of survey research technologies are key issues facing the industry', adding that CASRO has been at the forefront in protecting the public via its Code of Standards and Ethics for Survey Research and most recently its Privacy Protection Program.

Dr. Ponemon will continue Robinson's initiative to pass a Federal law protecting personally-identifiable information. The Ponemon Institute, headquartered in northern Michigan, is a research center dedicated to advancing privacy and data protection practices, advising organizations including the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Homeland Security on data privacy, security and management practices. Its research has also helped governments in Canada, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region in developing privacy policy and law. Dr. Ponemon also served as a founding member of the IAPP's advisory committee for the development of the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) credentialing process and was the author of the first exam. He has published five books and is an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University's CIO Institute.
