Mocarsky to Quit Arbitron

May 26 2009

Arbitron's company spokesman Thom Mocarsky is to leave at the end of June, after nearly 27 years with the firm.

Mocarsky told DRNO that he has not yet secured a new role.

During his time with the ratings giant, Mocarsky has played a major role in the introduction and marketing of the PPM (Portable People Meter). He was promoted to his current position of SVP, Press & Investor Relations in 2006.

Prior to joining, he worked as Manager of Communications at CBS Television Stations Marketing after graduating with a BS degree in Broadcast & Film from Boston University.

In a staff memo, President/CEO Michael Skarzynski commented: 'During Thom's more than 26 years at Arbitron, his hallmark has been his unique ability to translate complex information into customer-ready messages. He has had an integral leadership role in our client, press, and investor relations since he arrived and has shaped both the communication organization and approach into what they are today.'

At the time of going to press, DRNO was unable to ascertain whether Mocarsky is leaving of his own accord, or what his next move will be.

Since Skarzynski joined the company in January, he has scrapped Owen Charlebois' role as President, Technology, Research and Development, and created three new senior executive positions as part of a shake-up designed to facilitate effective decision-making. He has also announced redundancies for around 110 of Arbitron's 1,086 full-time employees, along with a program of cost-cutting in non-employee related areas.

Last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) opened an inquiry into claims that the PPM undercounts the audiences of minority radio stations. At the time, Mocarsky said that Arbitron welcomed the inquiry as an opportunity to better educate all parties about the PPM service and its advantages over the soon to be phased out diary-based system.
